Concussions Are Minor Traumatic Brain Injuries Caused By...

Patho: Concussions are minor traumatic brain injuries caused by bumping the head. The action taking place that causes a concussion is when the brain bounces around in the skull causing minor to major bruising. This causes chemical changes in the brain and leaves the damaged areas in the brain vulnerable to permanent damage if injured again. Symptoms involve â€Å"impairments of memory and attention, headache, and alteration of mental status, are the result of neuronal dysfunction mostly caused by functional rather than structural abnormalities† ( Signoretti, 2011). According to Signoretti, the symptoms occur because of the trauma causes the neurons to fall out of homeostasis causing a chain reaction of metabolic events such as temporary†¦show more content†¦From that a huge risk factor is motor vehicle accidents. Falling is seen a lot in children and from that fall risk is seen as a risk factor for children to receive concussions. Homecare Home care for patients with concussions is very unique. Depending on the severity of the concussion, the child should stay in dim to no light due to the light worsening the headache of the patient. The child should not watch television, play on phones, listen to music, or be around loud noises. All of those can cause worsening of the patient’s symptoms of the concussion. Medication can be given for the child, as long as it is verified by the doctor. The child can not return to normal activities until considered safe by the doctor. As the headache and symptoms subside the patient can return to normal living, except for contact sports they will be have to be cleared by a doctor as well as go through concussion precautions going back to sports. Social There are a lot of social views on concussions and different opinions as to how to care for children who may have received concussions and how this has changed dramatically over the last few years. One example of this is when playing football 10 years ago if we got a concussion we sat out for an hour and then jumped back into practice unless we were throwing up with a class III concussion. Now any risk of concussion children are being forced out of the game for upwards of two weeks. According to the NCAA guidelines
