Theft Essay Theft; the act or instance of stealing ones good without their consent. It is a bad habit that is often acquired and is insidious. Once developed one often justify it with fallacious reasoning to convince themselves that it is indeed normal. This was complex Marya, from the short story Theft by Joyce Carol Oates went through. Marya is a remarkably brilliant student who had to support herself through college by working at a local library because her family was poor. She also is very competitive and diligent. Her classmates and teachers often admire her wit, charm, and articulate arguments. However, one cannot judge a book by its cover. Although Marya, one of the scholarship girls, appears to be an upright, quiet student, she often partakes upon petty theft. These trivial items that she steals materialistically means nothing for her but the act thievery seems to be an outlet for her express her power and triumph over those who undermines her perfect record. As a scholarship girl Marya is very proud of her intelligence, yet in constant fear of the prospect of failure. She seems to always be preoccupied with studies, grades, employment, and finance and never had time for herself or any one else. Shes constant striving to keep her perfect record. When she feels that her perfect record is jeopardized she becomes indignant and begins to stonewall those around her. Perhaps this is the reason why she steals; to retaliate, to even the score. Though Marys grades for the course were all As, the grade posted for her final examination was C; and the final grade for the course was a-humiliating B+of course she ran up to his office, made an appointment to see him; after a few minutes clucking and fretting, he the professor who made the mistake on her final exam consented to raise the grade to AA minute later Marya was striding down the corridor, her pulses beating hot, in triumph. In her pocket was the black fountain pen she had lifted from the mans cluttered desk. In this in cident one can see how Marya reacted when her straight As record was almost ruin by the negligence of the professor. She felt cheated and thus in a whim, she snatched the professors pen. Although she didnt have any realistic used of the pen besides writing her name insanely over and over again in her notebook until it ran out of ink and threw it away, she felt empowered by the act-something that is intangible. The pen symbolizes her triumph over the ignorant man and her shame was erased by it. The instant when the pen passed over from the belonging of the professor to belonging to her was like winning an award or trophy. When an athlete break a world record or defeat an opponent he is endowed with fame, glory, success, and power. The fame and status of the opponent is then transfer to the victor. This is the feeling Marya sought. In stealing the pen she now receives the professors essence and power. According to Freud a mans greatest power lies in his ability to procreate which tran slate to his phallus. The pen was an extension of the professors phallus and ultimately his power.In taking this pen, she has symbolically castrated him-the person who almost took her perfect record away-and thus gaining this awesome power. She simultaneously eliminated an obstruction and preserved her perfect record. To Marya, education means an escape from her appalling life; an escape from her social debacle. In order for her to live up to her scholarship girl status, Marya felt that she must constantly exert herself; thrive for perfection. Everything she does evince this, from the way she acts, live, read. The enigmatic reason why she steals also reflects upon this relentless pursuit of perfection. It occurred to her with a chilling certitude that every moment not consciously devoted to her work was an error, a blunder. With this belief embedded deeply in her unconsciousness she felt that Imogene is insidiously stealing her precise time-she couldnt afford Imogene. To her Imogene was a social-parasite that is gradually feeding off her and weakening her. Not only did Imogene steal time from her but also she stole her innocence. Britpop as a representation of Britishness essays Nowadays, Britpop is known merely as a musical genre, represented especially by present-day groups such as Coldplay and Radiohead. However, it was started in the early 1990s and, similarly to most of popular art, it contains a wide range of elements of the culture in which it was born. Britpop is then, from this point of view, a representation of what is usually called Britishness. The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines Britpop as a type of popular music played by British groups in the 1990s, influenced by a variety of British musical traditions (2000). 6 Kinds of Simple Machines

6 Kinds of Simple Machines Work is performed by applying a force over a distance. These six simple machines create a greater output force than the input force; the ratio of these forces is the mechanical advantage of the machine. All six of the simple machines listed here have been used for thousands of years, and the physics behind several of them were quantified by the Greek philosopher Archimedes (ca. 287–212Â  BCE). When combined, these machines can be used together to create an even greater mechanical advantage, as in the case of a bicycle. Lever A lever is a simple machine that consists of a rigid object (often a bar of some kind) and a fulcrum (or pivot). Applying a force to one end of the rigid object causes it to pivot about the fulcrum, causing a magnification of the force at another point along the rigid object. There are three classes of levers, depending on where the input force, output force, and fulcrum are in relation to each other. The earliest lever was in use as a balance scale by 5000 BCE; Archimedes is credited with saying Give me a place to stand and I will move the earth. Baseball bats, seesaws, wheelbarrows, and crowbars are all types of levers. Wheel Axle A wheel is a circular device that is attached to a rigid bar in its center. A force applied to the wheel causes the axle to rotate, which can be used to magnify the force (by, for example, having a rope wind around the axle). Alternately, a force applied to provide rotation on the axle translates into rotation of the wheel. It can be viewed as a type of lever that rotates around a center fulcrum. The earliest wheel and axle combination known was a toy model of a four-wheeled cart made in Mesopotamia about 3500 BCE. Ferris wheels, tires, and rolling pins are examples of wheels and axles. Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a plane surface set at an angle to another surface. This results in doing the same amount of work by applying the force over a longer distance. The most basic inclined plane is a ramp; it requires less force to move up a ramp to a higher elevation than to climb to that height vertically. No one invented the inclined plane since it occurs naturally in nature, but people used ramps to build large buildings (monumental architecture) as early as 10,000–8,500Â  BCE. Archimedess On Plane Equilibrium describes the centers of gravity for various geometrical plane figures. Wedge The wedge is often considered a double inclined plane- both sides are inclined- that moves to exert a force along the lengths of the sides. The force is perpendicular to the inclined surfaces, so it pushes two objects (or portions of a single object) apart. Axes, knives, and chisels are all wedges. The common door wedge uses the force on the surfaces to provide friction, rather than separate things, but its still fundamentally a wedge. The wedge is the oldest simple machine, made by our ancestors Homo erectus at least as long ago as 1.2 million years to make stone tools. Screw A screw is a shaft that has an inclined groove along its surface. By rotating the screw (applying a torque), the force is applied perpendicular to the groove, thus translating a rotational force into a linear one. It is frequently used to fasten objects together (as the hardware screw and bolt does). The Babylonians in Mesopotamia developed the screw in the 7th century BCE, to elevate water from a low-lying body to a higher one (irrigate a garden from a river). This machine would later to be known as Archimedes screw. Pulley A pulley is a wheel with a groove along its edge, where a rope or cable can be placed. It uses the principle of applying force over a longer distance, and also the tension in the rope or cable, to reduce the magnitude of the necessary force. Complex systems of pulleys can be used to greatly reduce the force that must be applied initially to move an object. Simple pulleys were used by the Babylonians in the 7th century BCE; the first complex one (with several wheels) was invented by the Greeks about 400 BCE. Archimedes perfected the existing technology, making the first fully-realized block and tackle. Whats a Machine? The first use of the word machine (machina) in Greek was by the ancient Greek poet Homer in the 8th century BCE, who used it to refer to political manipulation. The Greek playwright Aeschylus (523–426 BCE) is credited with using the word in reference to theatrical machines such as the deus ex machina or god from a machine. Automobile Repair and Mechanics Essay Automobile repair is not only an interesting field to me, also I feel automobile maintenance is necessary knowledge to have in todays auto market. Like studying for school or learning the skills of a job; I feel knowing how to repair a vehicle will produce a cost effective lifestyle, and take out all the hassle anyone who owns a vehicle encounters everyday. How many Americans can change their own oil that dont work as mechanics, or what is the average repair bill for a same day repair are questions that bring concern to how becoming my own handyman makes a productive choice. I decided to explore the topic a little more to get a better understanding of the requirements to become an auto mechanic, for I have decided to become certified in Automotive Technology. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics(definition)- an auto mechanic is a technician that inspects, maintains and repairs automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity or other alternative fuels; like ethanol. Auto mechanics play a very important role in maintaining and keeping vehicles running efficiently. The field of auto mechanics reveals a long history, specialized schooling and strong career objectives for anyone that would like to choose this field as a career. There are certain requirements to become an auto mechanic, and a student can get the basics of automobile repair by taking a vocational class in high school. The course is not really considered training, but the class gives a basic knowledge of what mechanics do. To be considered a qualified auto mechanic; completing training at a post- secondary school like Pinellas Technical Education Centers or at a community college are the best choices, but the college aspect is not as much hands on as the secondary school. PTEC consists of 2 years of intense training(brochure), and the community college usually offers an associate degree for this field that also takes 2 years to complete the coursework. With these types of training, getting the most up to date training needed is essential; like using computer systems to detect problems with cars. Another form of training involves working as an apprentice to a master technician so questions are answered from experience . When all the formal training is completed a mechanic is considered certified when receiving a ASE Certification. This stands for Automobile Service Excellence Certification. The Bureau of Labor statistics suggests that individuals who live in large cities should get certified to help them with their search for jobs. An auto mechanics basic job function is performed in some type of repair shop, and working 40 plus hours a work is expected with such high volume of vehicles to work on. Sometimes work can continue into the weekend, along with performing work on the side to help earn some extra money. The working environment for the job involves identifying and fixing problems that deal with the car in a repair shop. Most of the time repairs are done indoors in a large, open garage like facility, including mechanics to get dirty due to all the grease repairs performed daily. These functions are real important that this does not bother someone who might want to do this as a job, for some of the grease and dirt is almost impossible to get completely rid of. Many shops have now included electrical technology as part of their services due to the fact that most cars have specialized computer systems. This new service has increased the mechanics skill level greatly (resource). Many repair shops rely on these computerized systems to help in identifying problems related to the car (Ly). The term auto mechanic is slowly fading away, and many mechanics are now being labeled as service technicians. The change in the name comes from the fact that working on many different parts of the car, and computer systems that require additional and more advanced training. Auto mechanics make a pretty good living. Starting out as a new auto mechanic the annual income will range between $25,000 $35,000. The next level mechanic could make $35,000- $45,000. After that the pay can be anywhere from $45,000 up to $100,000, for the higher pay range is for a Master Mechanic. It would be best to try and achieve the highest level of pay to make this job worthwhile. This is not exactly a goal that I am going to set forth for myself to achieve because simply auto work is all Im interested in. Many Master Mechanics work for luxury car manufacturers like Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar and Porsche. The future for service technicians looks very bright. For the next 3 years the auto mechanics field will see an increase close to 10- 20%. This increase is due to many technicians retiring, and due to an increase in cars being purchased. Dealerships and independent car repair shops will be the main employers of service technicians. The outlook continues to look positive for auto mechanics even though economic downfall is predicted to continue. In conclusion, auto mechanics is a very diverse field that requires complete dedication and skill to help become successful. Mechanics involves a long history, specialized schooling and the desire to achieve. Auto mechanics has evolved into a very complex and sometimes challenging field, and the future job outlook for this field is great and it is a very good choice for anyone interested in pursuing this career.

Shiksha Sopan Essay --

Shiksha means Education and Sopan means steps or stairs. Education is the step that leads a person ahead for the social upliftment. This was the thought behind starting this organization by four students of IIT Kanpur in 2001. People who join this course have high aspirations and strive hard to achieve their goals to establish themselves in life. But these students thought in a different way and wanted to take care of the underprivileged children of the society and make it a part of their dream. As a part of achieving their goal first they wanted to educate those children who belonged to the servant quarters of the campus. That’s how Shiksha Sopan came into existence. Understanding their noble thought other students, faculty members and the other employees of IIT Kanpur had joined hands with them. Later local young enthusiastic youth also joined this mission. It’s now a registered nongovernmental organization which imparts meaningful education to the under developed sections of the society which are in and around of IIT Kanpur, making the students self confident, dependent and socially conscious beings. Shiksha Sopan focuses on three objective i.e., Shiksha, Sanskar and Swavlamban. Shiksha means education. It is responsible for making socially sensitive and responsible citizens. Shiksh Sopan imparts education to students through innovative pedagogic methods. Audio and visual aids, demonstrations, activities, educational tours, lab activities and games form a part of this system. Inculcation of right attitudes and values, character building, respect for humanity and mother land are being given lot of impo... ...he girl child, liquor and gutka usage etc. The basic support for Shiksha Sopan is IIT Kanpur. Donations are also being accepted from organizations and well wishers. Donations can be made in the form of cash, cheques and demand drafts drawn in favour of Shiksha Sopan, IIT, Kanpur. The donations are used for schemes like Community Library; Higher Education Cell; VNK Merit Scholarship; Creating e-Resource; Pratibha Poshan Yojana Senior; Sopan Anaupacharik Shikshan Kendra; Evening Learning Centers and Sopan Science Cell. Shiksha Sopan’s achievements have been tremendous in all these years. It has given an opportunity to the students of Kanpur to serve the downtrodden. This project has proved that the so called urban elite society is really concerned and bothered about the villages and villagers and really contributes their share efficiently to bring them par with it.

Adolescents are known to be moody, insecure, argumentative, angst-ridden, impulsive, impressionable, reckless and rebellious.Teenagers are also characterized by odd sleeping patterns, awkward growth spurts, bullying, acne and snobbish behavior. So what could be the possible benefit of the teenage phase? Most other animals – apes and human ancestors included – skip that stage altogether, developing rapidly from infancy to full adulthood. Humans, in contrast, have a very puzzling four-year gap between sexual maturity and prime reproductive age. Anthropologists disagree on when the teenage phase first evolved, but pinpointing that date could help define its purpose.There are a variety of current explanations for the existence of teenagers. Some believe that we need longer for our large brains to develop. Other explanations suggest that a teenage phase allows kid s to learn about complex social behavior and other difficult skills, or that it is even required to develop coordinated bipedal bodies adapted to travelling long distances. Scientists once thought that the brain's internal structure was fixed at the end of childhood, and teenage behavior was blamed on raging hormones and a lack of experience.Then researchers discovered that the brain undergoes significant changes during adolescence. According to many recent studies, teen brains really are unique (see interactive graphic). Though many brain areas mature during childhood, others mature later – such as the frontal and parietal lobes, responsible for planning and self-control. Other studies have shown that teens fail to see the consequences of their actions, and that sudden increases in nerve connectivity in teen brains may make it difficult for teenagers to read social situations and other people's emotions. Statement of the Problem:The purpose of this study is to know the behav ior of the teenage that can make them drawn in this kind of relationship, why do they want to experience this relationship even though they are not in the proper age, how this usually started, and what are those reasons and purposes behind them. Significance of the Study: The importance of this research is we all know that â€Å"Youth is the Hope† as what Jose Rizal said. So as a Filipino youth citizen our concern is to give attention to the behavior of teenager for getting involved of that kind of relationship. Scope and Limitation:The study limits only to the teenage relationship, what comes to the teenager’s mind when we talk about romantic relationship, and also is this already legal for teenager to have a relationship even though they do not know what are those certain circumstances that they will be face for entering this relationship. In teenager’s mind they thought that they already handle their lives without the prevision of the parents. B. Lack of self confident and self-steam when they are with their parents. 1. They usually don’t have enough time between their parents. 2. They are engage in a broken family state. 3. They do not open-up with their parents for them to be guide. C. Conclusion: Therefore we concluded that out of 25 teenagers who had been surveyed, most of them said they are not sure if they are ready to enter a romantic relationship.The results also showed that, most of them think a relationship is all about love and commitment. Jane Eyre’s Struggle Between Conscience and Passion Essay

People can be held prisoner by their own feelings in an emotional box that confines them and controls them. Passion is the powerful, driving emotion that penetrates these feelings and compels one to break free of the box detaining them. In other words, passion is the motivation that drives one to take action against the shackles of their situation to create change in their life. All people have these passions, but what happens when these passions go against one’s conscience? A person’s conscience values things, like passions, as right or wrong, important or not important, or, significant or not significant. Thus, one’s conscience is like a barrier to one’s passions, and therefore, there is a constant struggle between the two. This internal struggle is prominent within Jane Eyre, the main character in Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre. Jane’s conscience tells her to marry the one she loves, but her passion for freedom and equality conflicts her and creates for her an internal struggle. In the final chapters of the novel, Jane’s conscience eventually defeats her passion for individualism, completing her internal journey and creating a victorious conclusion. Jane grew up in the Victorian Era in England, and era in which women faced much inequality and prejudice. This is the box that confines Jane throughout most of the novel, and ignites her passion to break free of it and be an equal, individual woman. Jane expresses this on page 129 and 130 of the novel as she states, â€Å"Women are supposed to be very calm generally; but women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties and a field for their efforts as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow-minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags. It is thoughtless to condemn them, or laugh at them, if they seek to do more or learn more than custom has pronounced necessary for their sex.† Thus, Jane does not want to be the property of a man because it interferes with her passion to be free. When Jane meets Mr. Rochester though, she develops a liking towards him, which eventually turns into a love for him. As a result, a struggle is born between Jane’s conscience, which is telling her to marry  Mr. Rochester, and her passion to be an equal individual woman. In the end, Jane realizes that loving Mr. Rochester is more important than continuing her rebellion against the constraints of society, and therefore, her conscience wins as she happily takes Mr. Rochester’s hand in marriage. The triumph of Jane’s conscience adds a victorious conclusion to the end of the novel, and completes Jane’s internal journey as a whole. Jane began her life watching her aunt and cousins let injustices wash over them. By experiencing this, Jane developed a passion to rebel against society and a passion for individualism, which she states in the quote on page 68, â€Å"If people were always kind and obedient to those who are cruel and unjust, the wicked people would have it all their own way: they would never feel afraid, and so they would never alter, but would grow worse and worse. When we are struck at without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; I am sure we should – so hard as to teach the person who struck us never to do it again.† This passion pushes Jane to survive the difficulties she encounters growing up, but forces her reject some of the happiness in life at the same time. This rejection is heartbreaking for the reader as the novel progresses, and she rejects more and more happiness. So therefore at the end of the novel when Jane finally sacrifices her passion for happiness with Mr. Rochester, it creates a triumphant ending and completes Jane’s transformation from rebellion and rejection to openness and love. Throughout the novel, Jane is in a constant struggle between her passion for individualism and her conscience, which tells her to pursue happiness instead. This struggle is the centerpiece for the novel, and therefore when Jane finally decides to let happiness in, it creates an exalting, happy ending for the reader. This ending furthermore completes Jane’s internal journey from rebellion to acceptance and love, which also is a satisfying ending for a reader.

pizza party essays Reality TV. Apparently, we all love it. The Nielsen ratings show that virtually all of Americas favorite programming consists of reality based TV shows, and new reality series are being created by the minute to satiate the masses thirst for programming designed for effortless consumption. That sucks. We, as a nation, are becoming dumber by watching these shoddily made shows which already reflect our de-evolving nature. But I want to trace this problem back to its root, which I think lies within the country of Japan. Dont get me wrong, I love Nintendo and Power Rangers and sushi and all that shit, but some of the game shows over there are just fucked up. They were the ones who started the reality TV trend. And I think its they who have contributed to the deterioration of traditional wholesome American TV programming like Macgyver, or Soul Train. Those were shows that demonstrated guile, as well as style. But the Japanese culture just had to instigate our downward spiral. I remember being about ten years old and going into the video store with my friend to rent a video, and came across a particular cassette box which piqued our interest. It was decorated with flashy neon colors and Japanese kanji, and the only English word on the box, in big bright letters, was Endurance. The pictures on the back showed what appeared to be Japanese contestants of a game-show who were making various expressions of pain. My friends step-father, Rusty, had apparently overlooked the NC-17 sticker and rented the movie for us, as well as a copy of Porkys for himself. Later that night, the Japanese culture had assaulted my fragile mind. Contestants were put in Medieval torture devices to see how long they could endure in exchange for money. It was riveting. And mind you, this show as well as others like it had been around in Japan years before we experienced reality TV in our culture....

They are also improved in terms of productivity. In addition, genetics research also assists in the advancement of tissue repair, which is useful to patients suffering from major injuries that necessitate reconstruction. According to scientists, animals lack consciousness thus do not suffer as much as a pain as humans. This means that experiential research on animals is more feasible than subjecting humans to the same form of research. Additionally, not only live animals are used in research, but also dead ones.
